Episode 2 – A Note on Positivity

Tall redheaded woman smiling with a mullberry coloured totebag

When I grow up I want to be a Maths teacher.

So here’s the thing about me, I’m inspired by people. If someone is interested and passionate about something I find this infectious. It feeds my imagination and passion, my interest and ultimately my ability too. For a couple of years at secondary school we had the most incredible maths teacher, she was calm and clearly loved the subject she was teaching. She taught in such a way that still inspires me to this day, the problem solving beauty in algebraic equations… Love it!

I enjoyed her teaching so much so that for years I wanted to become a maths teacher. I was unfortunate however that our next tutor sucked the joy out of it! But her positivity lived on and I aced my GCSE maths thanks to her.

It’s got me thinking a lot recently about the positive impressions that are left on us long past the initial interactions and how positivity is so intensely infectious in a way so many of us need at the moment. I recently read something about this and I’m going to try my best to retell the story…

Imagine you’re holding a bag of mini yarn balls and it’s full to the brim! Someone knocks into you and the mini balls spill out over the top of the bag and onto the floor… That’s obvious right? Of course it’s going to spill out.

Now imagine this – You’re walking along the pavement and someone bumps into you… What are you full of? What’s spilling out?

It’s an interesting idea and one that really resonated with me, these past few years have been so hard and honestly I’m not sure that every time someone bumped into me I think there’s been fear bubbling up as crossness and frustration. But part of moving forward is being consciously aware of what’s going on in the first place. I’m going to try compassion and curiosity on and see how they fit. So far so good!

Anyway, just a thought for you, wherever you are in the world today. Have a wonderful weekend whatever you’re up to.

Nu xx
